• Prepare a list of activities you would like to do and rate them based on priority. Give precedence to activities that cost the least.
  • If you did an activity in the morning, continue having fun at home or in the park with friends and family instead of spending money in the afternoon as well.
  • Check to see if there are special prices for activities of interest.
  • Download coupons online, buy tickets in advance to get the early bird cost, and check if group rates apply. Group rates can be significantly cheaper than regular prices.
  • Plan a trip together with other children to save gas and time for parents.
  • When offering friends to join an activity or trip, consider that others may have a limit to how much they can spend.
  • Sometimes having a relaxing day even while on vacation is just as important as doing an activity. Try taking it easy one day instead of planning activities for every day of Chol HaMoed.
  • There are times when you may have to do less than originally planned and hoped for if you realize the costs are becoming too high.
  • Turn off the lights, computers, AC and other electronics when possible to ensure that you’re saving on household costs while you’re away.
  • Take drinks and snacks with you wherever you go so that you don’t have to worry about buying refreshments too.

15 Free Activities:

  1. Go to the beach and the park (the free ones)
  2. Build a tent with friends and go camping
  3. Visit free visitor centers or outdoor markets
  4. Download online coloring pages, games and activities
  5. Create your own treasure hunts
  6. Look for good new recipes and cook together
  7. Visit relatives and family, or invite them over to your house
  8. Go to work with Mom/Dad/Grandma/Grandpa
  9. Set a rotation with friends and spend your days at each other’s houses
  10. Pick your favorite movies and watch a movie marathon
  11. Let children organize the house and pay with points or virtual money – at the end of the vacation go together on an outing.
  12. It’s fine to stay at home for the day relaxing without going out for an activity
  13. Set financial limits on your vacations: the number of ice creams, movies, and other items you can buy.
  14. Look for coupons when you go out to eat. You don’t have to order appetizers and desert along with your main course, and look for the business meals or shared meals.
  15. Drink water in place of juice and sodas. Water saves you money and helps keeps you healthy!
